Resize Image to 20KB Online
Compress a photo or a signature scan down to 20 KB in your browser. Every result shows its real byte size and pixel dimensions, and the tool says plainly when 20 KB is out of reach.

What Fits in 20 Kilobytes
20 KB is 20,480 bytes. A JPEG of an ordinary photograph costs somewhere between a quarter and a half a byte for every pixel it stores, so 20 KB buys roughly 50,000 to 80,000 pixels in total - about 300 by 230. That is the honest arithmetic behind this page: a 12 megapixel phone photo cannot become a 20 KB file and stay 12 megapixels. Something has to go, and this tool gives up resolution rather than quality, because a small sharp picture is more useful than a full sized smeared one. Flat artwork behaves completely differently. A scanned signature is mostly white with a few thousand dark pixels, and JPEG spends almost nothing on flat areas, so a 600 by 200 signature commonly lands at 8 to 15 KB with no downscaling at all. The tool works by measuring rather than guessing. It encodes once, reads the exact byte count and pixel count of what came out, computes the bytes per pixel that this specific image actually costs, and solves for the pixel count that would fit the budget. That solved size drives the next attempt. Two or three rounds is normally enough. There are hard stops in both directions: quality never drops below about 0.54 on the JPEG scale, the long side never goes below 96 pixels, and no more than five encodes ever run. When those limits are hit before 20 KB is, the page says so and reports the smallest file it did produce. Camera metadata is stripped, because an EXIF block alone can eat several kilobytes of a 20 KB allowance. Everything runs on the canvas element in your own browser; no file is uploaded anywhere.
Why People Need Exactly 20KB
Almost nobody wants a 20 KB image for its own sake. They want it because a form refuses to accept anything larger. Government examination portals are the biggest single source of this: application systems for staff selection, banking, university entrance and civil service recruitment routinely cap the candidate photograph at 20 to 50 KB and the signature at 10 to 20 KB, and they reject the upload outright rather than compressing it for you. The same ceiling shows up on older municipal record systems, visa appointment sites, insurance claim portals and internal HR tools built a decade ago against a database column that was sized once and never revisited. These limits are almost never about bandwidth today. They exist because a field was defined long ago, thousands of records depend on it, and nobody is going to migrate a production database so an applicant can upload a nicer photo. That makes 20 KB a fixed obstacle rather than a preference, and it makes an honest answer more valuable than an optimistic one: if your document scan genuinely cannot fit, you need to know that now, not after the portal rejects it on the last day of the application window. It is also why this page reports the output resolution as prominently as the byte count - many of the same forms specify a pixel range alongside the size cap, and a file that clears 20 KB by becoming a 140 pixel thumbnail will fail the second check just as surely.
How to Compress an Image to 20KB
Start from the highest quality copy you have. Compressing an image that has already been squeezed once gives a worse result at the same byte count, because the first pass has already thrown away the detail the second pass would have used.
Drop in your photo or signature scan. JPG, PNG, WebP and BMP are accepted; several files at once is fine
Leave the output format on JPEG. It is the only format that reliably reaches 20 KB for a photograph
Click Apply and read the result panel - it reports the exact byte size and the exact output dimensions for each file
If a file is marked as not reaching 20 KB, check the reason given, then either accept the closest result or crop the image tighter before trying again
