What Image to PDF Does

A PDF is a page description: it defines a canvas of a given physical size and places content onto it at given coordinates. This tool builds that description around your images. For each file it creates a page, works out where the image should sit on it, and embeds the image data inside the document. All the geometry is calculated in millimetres, which is why the margin options are stated in millimetres rather than pixels — a PDF page has a real physical size, and 20 mm is 20 mm whether the image is 800 pixels wide or 8000. With A4, Letter, or Legal selected, the page is fixed and the image is scaled to fit inside the area left over after the margins, keeping its aspect ratio and centred on both axes. Nothing is stretched and nothing is cropped; a square photo on a portrait A4 page simply leaves space above and below. With Fit to image selected the page instead takes the shape of the image, converted at 96 DPI, so a screenshot becomes a page with no whitespace at all. Two details matter for the result. First, transparency: JPEG has no alpha channel and the image stream a PDF embeds carries no soft mask, so a transparent PNG or WebP would come out with black patches. Transparent images are therefore flattened onto white first, which is what almost everyone expects a document page to look like. Second, orientation: photos from phones and cameras are frequently stored rotated with an Exif Orientation tag telling viewers to turn them. PDF ignores that tag entirely. Files carrying one are re-encoded with the rotation physically applied, so the page is the right way up; files that are already upright are embedded byte for byte with no re-encoding and no quality loss at all. The whole process runs in your browser using its own image decoder, so your photos, scans, and documents never leave the device.

Nothing is transmitted at any point, which matters when the pages are ID documents, medical letters, contracts, or bank statements. Once the page has loaded it also keeps working with the network disconnected, and the practical limit on batch size is your device's memory rather than an upload cap.

A PDF wraps each image in page structure, so a small overhead is always added. The bigger factor is the compression setting. With Compress large images on, anything whose longest side exceeds 2480 pixels is scaled down to that, which is A4 at 300 DPI and past the point where print can resolve more detail — this usually makes the PDF far smaller than the originals. With it off, full-resolution images are embedded and the PDF can be larger than the sum of the input files, since images that had to be re-encoded no longer benefit from their original compression settings.
It gives every page the exact proportions of its own image, so there is no border or empty space anywhere on the page. Pixel dimensions are converted to physical size at 96 DPI, the standard screen reference density, which means a 1920 by 1080 screenshot becomes a page roughly 508 by 286 mm. Choose this for screenshots, comics, and artwork where whitespace would look wrong. Choose A4 or Letter instead when the file is going to be printed on real paper.
Never. The image is scaled so it fits entirely inside the page area, keeping its original aspect ratio, and is then centred horizontally and vertically. Whichever dimension runs out of room first sets the scale, and the leftover space stays blank. A portrait photo on a landscape page will therefore be tall and narrow with space either side, rather than being distorted or having its edges cut off.
They are flattened onto a white background before being placed on the page. This is deliberate: the compressed image stream a PDF embeds has no alpha channel, so a transparent logo or cut-out would otherwise render as solid black in most PDF viewers and print that way too. White matches the page and is what a document is expected to look like. If you need the transparency preserved, keep the PNG alongside the PDF.
Because a PDF page is a physical object, not a grid of pixels. A4 is 210 by 297 mm regardless of how many pixels your image has, so a margin expressed in pixels would mean a different amount of paper for every image in the batch. Stating it in millimetres means a 20 mm margin is 20 mm of real paper on every page, which is also how print shops and document templates specify it. In inches, the presets are roughly 0.4, 0.8, and 1.2 inches.
