A layered canvas, not a single filter pass
The Photo Editor is a browser-based canvas built around layers rather than one flattened bitmap. Every photo, text box, shape, or sticker you add becomes its own object in the Layers panel, and every filter or adjustment you apply sits on top of the pixels underneath instead of overwriting them. That means you can go back later and retype a headline, swap a filter, adjust a shape's corner radius, or hide a layer entirely - the underlying image data isn't touched until you export. Selections and masks work the same way: painting a mask on a layer hides part of it without deleting any pixels, so you can refine or undo the edge afterward. Guides help you line up mixed elements precisely, and the History panel lets you step backward through the edit sequence if something goes wrong. The whole editor runs in your browser using canvas rendering - there's no upload step and no server round-trip while you work. What it does not do is generate or repair image content for you: there's no AI object removal, no automatic background cutout, and no upscaling built in here, since those need dedicated processing and live as separate tools on this site. This editor's job is manual composition and adjustment - you decide what to select, mask, draw, or filter - and it's a single-canvas workspace, so it edits one project at a time rather than batch-processing a folder.
When a single filter isn't enough
Most one-click tools apply one effect to one image and hand you the result. The Photo Editor matters when your edit has more than one moving part: you're combining two photographs into a composite and need to mask the seam between them without flattening too early, you're marking up a screenshot with callout shapes and text that still need repositioning after a client looks at a draft, or you're building a banner where a background photo, a logo, and a headline all have to line up against shared guides. It also matters when you're not sure a filter is right yet - because adjustments live on their own layer, you can toggle one off, compare it against the untouched original, and try a different one without redoing the whole image. And because everything stays editable until export, you can leave a project half-finished, come back, and keep adjusting individual pieces instead of starting over from a merged file.
Working the layer stack
The workflow follows the layer stack from bottom to top, using the same panels visible in the editor's UI.
Import your photo - it lands as the base layer in the Layers panel; add more images, Text, Shapes, or Stickers as new layers on top
Make a selection or paint a mask to isolate part of a layer, then apply Filters or Adjustments to just that layer, or reposition Text and Shape layers independently
Use Guides to align elements and the History panel to step back through changes if an edit doesn't work out
Export to flatten the visible layers into a single image file - hidden layers are dropped, so check visibility before you export
