What is Image Resizing?

Resizing changes the pixel dimensions of an image while keeping the whole composition. That makes it different from cropping, which discards part of the picture to change the framing. Reducing dimensions is straightforward: the tool has more source pixels than it needs and can average them cleanly. Enlarging is not — new pixels must be invented by interpolation, which can only guess at detail the camera never recorded. You can work in exact pixels when a platform specifies a size, or by percentage when you want to scale a mixed set of images proportionally.

Why Resize Images?

Most images are used at a fraction of the size they were captured at. A 4000-pixel camera photo displayed in a 600-pixel column forces every visitor to download roughly forty times the data they can actually see. Making an image smaller generally looks clean, because high-quality resampling averages the extra pixels away. Making it larger cannot recover detail that was never captured — the result gets softer, and fine text or patterns are where it shows first. If you need a large version, go back to the highest-resolution original rather than enlarging a web copy.
With the ratio locked, changing the width updates the height automatically (and the reverse), so the proportions of the original are preserved. Unlocking it lets you force an exact canvas, but anything that does not match the source shape will be stretched — obvious on faces, wheels, logos, and architecture. Crop instead when you need a different shape rather than a different size.
Resizing scales the entire image up or down and keeps everything in frame. Cropping cuts away the outer parts, changing what is visible and often the aspect ratio too.
