What is Image Compression?

Image compression reduces the bytes needed to store or send a picture. Lossy formats like JPEG and WebP discard detail the eye is least likely to notice, so the file shrinks but the pixels change. PNG compression is lossless by default; this tool shrinks PNGs by reducing the palette to the colors an image actually uses, checking the visual result as it goes. The right target is not the smallest possible file, but the smallest file that still looks correct where people will view it — a 200-pixel thumbnail and a full-width hero photo have very different requirements.

Why Compress Images?

Photos straight from a phone or camera are routinely 4–12 MB, far more than a web page, an email attachment, or a marketplace listing needs. Cutting that to a few hundred kilobytes shortens page load, lowers bandwidth bills, and gets files past upload limits that would otherwise reject them. Because Google measures Largest Contentful Paint on real visits, an oversized hero image is often the single biggest drag on a page's Core Web Vitals score.

For JPEG and WebP, yes — some detail is permanently discarded, though at moderate settings the difference is usually invisible at normal viewing size. PNG compression here works by reducing the color palette rather than blurring detail, so flat graphics and screenshots stay crisp. Move the quality slider and compare the preview at 100% before committing; the point where quality becomes visible depends heavily on the image.
WebP gives the smallest file at comparable quality and works in every current browser, so it is the default choice for websites. JPEG is the safer option when the file will be opened by older software or an upload form that rejects unfamiliar extensions. Keep PNG for logos, screenshots, and anything with transparency — converting those to JPEG will fill the transparent areas with solid color.
The file was probably already optimized. Images exported by a CMS, a social platform, or a previous compression pass have little left to remove, and pushing the quality slider further mostly adds artifacts rather than saving bytes. If you need a much smaller file, reduce the pixel dimensions first — resizing a 4000px photo to the 1200px it will actually display saves far more than any quality setting.
Almost always, when you know the final display size. A browser that shows an image at 800 pixels wide gains nothing from downloading 4000 pixels, and encoding those extra pixels is wasted work. Resize to the intended dimensions first, then compress the resized copy. Keep the full-resolution original if the image may later be printed or zoomed.
