What This Converter Does

This tool renders each PDF page onto a canvas with pdf.js — the engine Firefox uses to display PDFs — and encodes the result as PNG, entirely inside this browser tab. PNG is the format to choose when what is on the page is text, tables, diagrams, charts or line art, and the reason is in how the two formats compress. JPG transforms the image in 8×8 blocks and discards the high-frequency components first; a hard black-on-white edge is nothing but high frequency, so every letter comes back with a faint grey halo around it, and thin table rules can smear away entirely. PNG stores pixels losslessly, so a rendered page is exactly the pixels pdf.js drew — which also means a page can be re-cropped, annotated or re-encoded later without accumulating damage the way a re-saved JPG does. The trade-off is size, and it is not small: on a photographic page PNG can be five to ten times the size of a JPG at a quality nobody would complain about, because lossless compression has almost nothing to exploit in continuous-tone imagery. Resolution behaves the same way here as anywhere in PDF. The format's internal unit is 1/72 inch, so a page rendered at scale 1 is 72 DPI — the size the document declares and too coarse for body text. 150 DPI is the readable default; 300 DPI is print and OCR territory at four times the pixel count. Pages are rendered and encoded one at a time so long documents do not have to fit in memory at once, and each page is painted on white first, because PDF pages carry no background of their own and a transparent one renders as black in most viewers.

Why PNG Rather Than JPG

Both formats turn a page into a picture. The difference shows up on exactly the content most PDFs are made of — text, rules, and flat-colour diagrams — where lossy compression leaves visible damage and lossless does not.

PDF to PNG FAQ

No. Parsing and rendering are done by pdf.js inside your browser, in a background worker, and the PNGs are written straight to your downloads folder. No copy of the document is transmitted or stored, which is the reason to prefer this over the usual converters when the file is a contract, a statement, a medical letter or a scan of an ID document.
Whenever the page is mostly text, tables, diagrams, charts or line art. JPG compresses in 8×8 blocks and sheds high-frequency detail first, which is precisely what a hard letter edge is, so text comes back with faint grey ringing around it. PNG is lossless and reproduces those edges exactly. Flip the choice for photographic pages — scans of photographs, glossy brochures — where PNG can be five to ten times larger for no visible gain.
Because lossless compression can only exploit repetition, and photographs have very little. A 300 DPI PNG of a photo-heavy A4 page can easily exceed 20 MB. Three things reduce it: render at 150 DPI instead of 300 unless you need print resolution, convert only the pages you actually need, and use the JPG converter for pages that are mostly imagery. Running the PNG through the compressor on this site also helps, since it can reduce the colour depth of flat-colour pages substantially.
No, and that is deliberate. PDF pages have no background of their own — the white you see is supplied by the viewer — so a page rendered onto a transparent canvas comes out as floating dark text that disappears against a dark background and turns solid black in viewers that flatten transparency. Each page is painted onto white first. If you need transparency around a specific element, render the page and then run it through the background remover.
Start at 150 DPI, which keeps body text readable at a manageable file size. Use 72 DPI only for thumbnails and previews — it is the size the PDF declares and too coarse for small print. Use 300 DPI when the page is going to be printed or run through OCR, since text recognition accuracy improves sharply between 150 and 300 DPI. Above 300 there is rarely anything to gain from a screen-generated document.
Use the Pages field. It takes single numbers, comma-separated lists and ranges, including open-ended ones: "1-3, 7, 12-" means pages one to three, page seven, and twelve through the end. Leaving it empty converts the whole document. Numbers past the last page are ignored rather than treated as an error, so "1-999" is a valid shorthand for everything.
Encrypted PDFs cannot be opened without their password, and this tool neither prompts for one nor tries to work around the encryption. Open the document in a PDF reader with the password, save or print it as a new unprotected file, and convert that. Without the password the document is not meant to be readable, and no converter should change that.
You can add as many files as you like in one go and they are processed in sequence, with a single progress bar across the whole batch. Every page is named after its source document with a zero-padded page number, so the ZIP unpacks in reading order and it stays obvious which page came from which file. Very large batches at 300 DPI are worth splitting up, since the images accumulate in memory until you download them.
