What Is AI Image Upscaling?

Enhance Image runs your photo through an AI upscaling model instead of stretching pixels the way a normal resize does. A standard resize takes the pixels you already have and interpolates between them, which is why blowing up a small photo usually looks soft or blocky. This tool instead sends the image to a server-side enhancement model that has learned what edges, textures, and fine detail typically look like, and it uses that knowledge to generate new pixel information at the larger size you request via the Scale Factor. The result is closer to what a higher-resolution capture might have looked like, not a mathematically smoothed copy of the original. Because the model works conservatively (staying close to what's actually in your photo rather than inventing new scene content), it is good at sharpening edges, cleaning up compression softness, and producing a crisper result at 2x or 4x size. What it cannot do is recover detail that was never captured in the first place: a photo that's badly out of focus, heavily motion-blurred, or shot at extremely low resolution will come out bigger and somewhat cleaner, but it will not turn into a genuinely sharp, high-detail image. Upscaling improves how existing detail reads at a larger size; it is not a substitute for a better original.

The model works conservatively, meaning it stays close to what's actually in your source rather than fabricating new scene content, so heavy motion blur, extreme pixelation, or very low source resolution will still look soft after enhancing, just at a larger size. If the source detail genuinely isn't there, no upscaler will fully manufacture it.
Resize Image changes an image to exact pixel dimensions using standard interpolation, runs entirely in your browser, and is the right choice when you need a specific width and height with no quality claims attached. Enhance Image instead scales up by a Scale Factor using an AI model that adds plausible new detail, which is what you want when enlarging a small source needs to look sharp rather than just be a specific size. If you only need precise dimensions and the source is already reasonably sharp, Resize Image is faster and keeps everything local.
Scale Factor sets the multiplier applied to both the width and height of your output, most commonly 2x or 4x. A 2x factor on a 1000x800 image produces a 2000x1600 result; 4x produces 4000x3200. Larger factors mean more pixels for the model to generate and a bigger output file, so pick the smallest factor that actually meets your target size rather than defaulting to the largest option.
This tool is not local processing. Your image is uploaded to a server and run through an AI enhancement model to produce the upscaled result, then the output is sent back to your browser. That's inherent to how AI upscaling works, since the model doing the detail inference is too large to run in a browser tab. If keeping an image entirely on your device matters for a particular file, use one of the tools on the site that process images locally, such as the resize or crop tools.
The model's job is upscaling, and some visual cleanup happens as a side effect of that process because it favors coherent edges and textures over noisy detail. It is not a dedicated noise-reduction or color-correction tool, though, so a photo with strong sensor noise or bad white balance will still show those issues after enhancement, just at a higher resolution. For targeted brightness, contrast, or color fixes, use the adjustment controls in the editor instead.
The output comes back as a PNG regardless of what format you uploaded, so a JPEG or WebP source will still download as a PNG after enhancement. Keep that in mind if file size matters, since PNG output at 2x or 4x resolution is noticeably larger than a compressed JPEG of the same dimensions. If you need a smaller file afterward, run the result through a compression tool.
You can re-upload the output and enhance it again, but each pass is generating new pixel detail based on the previous pass's output rather than the true original, so artifacts and over-smoothing tend to compound. Two chained 2x passes will not look the same as a single larger scale applied once, and usually looks worse. If you need more than 4x, it's better to start from the highest-resolution original you have rather than stacking enhancement passes.
The tool accepts standard image formats through the upload field, but very large source files take longer to upload and process and can time out or fail depending on your connection and the server load at the time. If a large file isn't completing, try a smaller source image or a lower scale factor first to confirm the workflow, then scale up from there.
