What 100 Kilobytes Is Good For
100 KB is 102,400 bytes and it is the first target on this site where the answer stops being a compromise. A photograph at roughly a third of a byte per pixel fits around 300,000 pixels, which is about 700 by 450 - big enough for an article image, a category thumbnail, a marketplace listing or a profile picture at any size a browser will display one. Plenty of photographs reach 100 KB without losing a single pixel, purely by dropping the encoder quality from the near-lossless setting a phone camera writes down to something in the 0.6 to 0.8 range that nobody notices on a screen. The tool tries that path first. It only starts removing resolution when the file is more than eight times the budget, which is the point at which quality reduction alone provably cannot get there and a full resolution first attempt would just be seconds spent proving it. The measurement loop then takes over: encode, read the real byte and pixel counts, compute this image's actual cost per pixel, solve for the size that fits, repeat at most five times. Screenshots are the interesting case at this target. A screenshot saved as PNG is lossless by definition, and PNG has no quality setting to give up, so a full HD screen capture will sit well above 100 KB no matter what. The page detects that the output is lossless, reports the shortfall as a format problem rather than a mysterious failure, and tells you that switching the output to JPEG is the actual remedy. Metadata is dropped on the way through, and every step happens locally in the browser.
Why 100KB Is a Sensible Web Target
100 KB per image is roughly where a page stops being slow because of its pictures. Largest Contentful Paint, the Core Web Vitals metric that decides whether a page feels fast, is usually determined by the biggest image above the fold, and getting that image under a few hundred kilobytes is by far the cheapest improvement available to most sites. Inline article images matter even more in aggregate: a long post with fifteen photos at 2 MB each is a thirty megabyte page that no mobile connection will render politely, while the same post at 100 KB per image is a page that loads before the reader loses interest. There are hard limits at this number too. Plenty of forums, wikis, job boards, ticketing systems and email marketing platforms cap attachments or inline images at 100 KB, and older intranet applications frequently do. Email is its own case: many corporate gateways still reject messages over a few megabytes, and a newsletter with a dozen embedded images at 100 KB each stays comfortably inside that where the untouched originals would not. The other reason this number keeps coming up is that it is roughly where diminishing returns begin for a photograph displayed at ordinary article width. Below 100 KB you start visibly trading sharpness for bytes; above it, most of the extra data goes into detail that the display size never resolves. Choosing it as a fixed target rather than a quality percentage means you get a verifiable answer - the page tells you the file is 94 KB and whether its resolution survived - instead of a setting you have to judge by eye and hope was enough.
How to Compress an Image to 100KB
For web use, decide the display width first. There is no point feeding a 3000 pixel photo into a slot that renders at 800 - the extra pixels cost bytes and buy nothing.

Leave the format on Keep the original for photographs; switch to JPEG if a PNG screenshot needs to reach the target
