Almost no camera shoots the 2:3 shape a 4 x 6 print is cut to, so the fit setting decides what happens to the difference. A 4:3 phone photo held upright either loses about a tenth of its width to the crop, or keeps everything and picks up a band roughly a third of an inch deep at the top and bottom. Turn the same photo sideways and the bill roughly doubles in both directions, because this frame is portrait: a landscape shot either gives up about half its width, or sits as a strip with wide bands of background above and below it. Each result line says which of those happened and by how much.
4 x 6 inches at 300 DPI is 1200 x 1800 pixels. Print shops measure paper in inches and files are measured in pixels; the DPI is what connects the two. Sending fewer pixels than this leaves the lab enlarging your photo for you.

What 4x6 Means in Pixels
Inches measure paper and pixels measure files, and DPI is the exchange rate between the two. At 300 dots per inch, the density photo labs print at, 4 inches is 1200 pixels and 6 inches is 1800, so a 4 x 6 print wants a 1200 x 1800 file - about 2.2 megapixels. 300 is not arbitrary: it is roughly the point where printed dots stop being separable at reading distance, and it is the figure nearly every kiosk and mail-order lab quotes. Send fewer pixels than that and the lab enlarges the file for you, with no say from you in how. The harder problem is shape. A 4 x 6 print is 2:3. Phone cameras mostly shoot 4:3, mirrorless and DSLR bodies shoot 3:2, and anything cropped for a social feed is square or 4:5, so only the 3:2 files drop straight in. A 3024 x 4032 phone portrait scaled to fit lands at 1200 x 1600 inside the 1800-pixel-tall frame, leaving 100 pixels of background above and 100 below, a third of an inch of border on each. The same photo scaled to fill lands at 1350 x 1800, and 150 pixels of width - about a tenth of the picture - are cut away. Turn the camera sideways and the arithmetic turns severe, because this frame stays portrait: a 4032 x 3024 landscape shot fills it only after half its width is discarded, and fits inside it only as a 1200 x 900 strip with a 450 pixel band of background above it and another below. Half the print is picture and half is border. That symmetry is the reason the fit selector exists at all - the pixels have to come from somewhere, and the only question is whether they come out of the photograph or out of the paper. Enlargement is the other thing worth watching. 2.2 megapixels is modest, so an original camera file has pixels to spare, but a copy returned by a chat app, a download from a social feed or a screenshot often does not. A 1080 x 1440 image has to grow by 10 to 25 percent depending on the fit, which nobody sees on paper. A 480 x 640 thumbnail has to grow between two and a half and nearly three times, which everybody does. Interpolation cannot recover detail a sensor never recorded, so the factor is reported rather than quietly applied. Decoding, cropping and encoding all happen on the canvas element inside your own browser, so the photo is never uploaded.
Why 4x6 Is the Default Print Size
In the United States, 4 x 6 is simply what a photo print means. It is the size a drugstore kiosk offers first, the size mail-order labs price in cents, the sleeve size in nearly every album, and the opening in the cheap frames sold in packs. Europe and much of Asia print 10 x 15 cm, the same 2:3 proportion within a millimetre, so a file prepared here works there too. That ubiquity is why the size outlives the technology around it: people who have not printed anything in years still reach for 4 x 6 when they want a picture in a frame, mailed with a card, pinned to a board, or handed to a relative who does not use a phone. The size also turns up where nothing is printed at all, because application forms, listing sites and internal systems inherited the phrase from the paper forms they replaced, and what they check is a 2:3 file of reasonable resolution. Preparing the crop yourself matters in both cases. A kiosk handed a 4:3 file will cut it to 2:3 without asking, and its automatic cut is centred - which is harmless in a landscape and takes the top of a head off in a portrait often enough to be the standard complaint about self-service printing. Choosing where those pixels come from, before the file leaves your computer, is the entire point of this step.
How to Resize a Photo to 4x6
Work from the largest copy of the photo you have. A version that has been through a messaging app has already given up resolution, and this step cannot put it back - it can only enlarge what is left.
Drop in one photo or a whole batch. JPG, PNG, WebP and BMP are accepted
Choose the fit. Crop to fill uses the entire sheet and discards the overflow; fit whole image keeps every part of the picture and adds a border in the colour you pick
Press Apply and read each result line - it states the crop or the border as a percentage of the frame, and flags any file that had to be enlarged
Download, then order the print as 4 x 6 or 10 x 15 cm. Labs work from the pixel count, so the DPI tag inside the file does not have to read 300
