3:1 is a severe shape, and the arithmetic is worth seeing before you settle on a photograph. Fill a 1500 x 500 banner with an ordinary 4:3 phone picture taken sideways and you keep a horizontal band worth 44 percent of its height; hold the phone upright and only a quarter of the picture survives. Keep the whole image instead and nothing is cut, but that upright photo then occupies a quarter of the banner with flat colour either side of it. Neither outcome is a fault in the tool - it is what has to happen when something close to square becomes three times wider than it is tall. Each result line names which happened and by how much, so the cost is visible here rather than after the upload.

What a 3:1 Strip Does to a Photograph

A profile banner is 1500 pixels wide and 500 tall, which is three to one. Almost nothing is photographed at three to one. Camera sensors are 3:2, phones shoot 4:3, and anything already cropped for a feed is square or taller than it is wide, so every image arriving here has to surrender most of its height or spend most of the banner on background. That is the whole of the problem, and it is better met before you upload than after. The figures, for the shapes people actually own. A 6000 x 4000 camera file is 3:2, and filling the banner keeps exactly half its height. A 4032 x 3024 phone photo taken sideways keeps 44 percent. The same phone held upright keeps 25 percent. A square export keeps a third. In every one of those cases the surviving band is taken from the vertical middle, because nothing here knows where the subject is - so a horizon sitting two thirds down the frame, or a face in the lower third, is precisely the composition that comes out wrong. Keeping the whole image turns each of those figures inside out into background: the upright photo becomes a 375 pixel picture with 562 pixels of flat colour on either side of it. Some pictures take this well. A landscape with a wide horizon, a texture, a repeating pattern, a long row of anything, a shot deliberately taken with air on both sides - these give up height that was never carrying the image. A single portrait, a close-up, or artwork composed inside a square do not, and no fit setting rescues them. When the picture matters, cut a 3:1 band out of it by hand with the crop tool on this site, choosing which band survives, then bring that here to land it exactly on 1500 x 500. Resolution is rarely what stops you, since 1500 pixels across is less than almost any phone or camera produces and most sources shrink rather than stretch. The exception is a band cut out of something already small: a strip taken from a 1080 pixel wide screenshot has to be enlarged about 1.4 times to reach 1500, and the result line names that factor instead of applying it quietly. On weight and format, the upload takes JPEG, PNG and GIF and stops at 2 MB, a ceiling a 1500 x 500 photograph never comes close to - a few hundred kilobytes is typical. What a Header Has to Survive

A banner is never displayed the way you designed it. It is drawn a few hundred pixels wide inside a profile column, so fine detail and small type shrink to a fraction of the size you are looking at while you edit. It is overlapped: the profile picture sits across the lower left as a circle, and the space beside and below it belongs to the interface rather than to your image. It is redrawn for phones, tablets and desktop browsers, and those layouts do not all show the same proportion of the file, so the top and bottom edges go first and the far left and right are not guaranteed either. And it sits against a page background that changes colour when the reader switches between light and dark. The practical result is a composition rule rather than a size rule. Put whatever has to be seen in the middle band, towards the centre and right. Keep faces, marks and words away from the lower left corner and away from all four edges. Prefer an image that still reads when it is a couple of centimetres wide, which in practice means large shapes and strong contrast rather than a detailed scene. Then look at the finished banner on a phone as well as a desktop, because the phone is what crops it hardest. None of that is enforced on this page, and it would be dishonest to imply otherwise. What happens here is narrow: your image lands exactly on 1500 x 500, and the tool tells you what the shape cost. Where the important part of the picture ends up is decided earlier, when you choose the photograph and the band you keep.

How to Make a 1500 x 500 Header

Choose the photograph for its shape before anything else. A picture with air on both sides of its subject survives this; a tight portrait does not, and no setting on this page changes that.

Frequently Asked Questions

Because 3:1 is far wider than anything a camera makes. A banner is three times as wide as it is tall, while a phone photo is four units across to three down and a camera file three to two. Turning one into the other means height has to go: half of a 3:2 file, 56 percent of a sideways phone photo, three quarters of an upright one. The alternative is to keep the whole picture and let the leftover width fill with colour, which for that upright photo means three quarters of the banner is background. There is no third option - the two shapes are simply that far apart.
The shape does nearly all the work. A banner is rendered a few hundred pixels wide in most layouts, so 1500 across is generous headroom rather than a threshold you must hit precisely; a file somewhat over or under would look identical in use. The ratio is what is unforgiving. An image that is not three times as wide as it is tall gets fitted into the space by something other than you, and you find out how only once it is live. Getting to 3:1 deliberately is the part worth care.
The lower left. The avatar is drawn as a circle straddling the bottom edge of the banner, so a roughly square region in that corner is partly hidden, and the area next to it carries your name and bio in front of the image. Treat the bottom left eighth or so as unusable and compose towards the centre and right. How much is covered differs between the phone app and a desktop browser, and it has been changed before, so leave margin rather than fitting something up against the edge of it.
One, and it is a real one. A logo, a wordmark or flat artwork on a solid colour looks correct centred in a field of that same colour - choose the matching background here and the padding becomes part of the design instead of a letterbox. That is the case this setting genuinely serves. For a photograph it almost never works, because the bands read as an error next to neighbouring profiles whose banners run edge to edge.
It will not do what you are hoping for. Transparency forces the output to PNG, and the transparent area is then composited against whatever the platform places behind it, which you do not control and which is a different colour in light mode and dark mode. A banner built to vanish into one theme becomes a visible pale or dark block in the other. If you want the edges to merge, pick a solid colour on purpose and accept that it looks like a colour.
Two ordinary causes and one you can rule out. The banner is shown much narrower than 1500 pixels in most layouts and then scaled back up on a high density screen, and platforms re-encode uploads rather than serving your exact bytes, which costs fine detail and hurts thin lines and small type most. The one you can eliminate here is enlargement: if the result line flagged a factor, the file was already soft before it left this page, and the fix is a bigger source rather than a different upload.
JPEG for a photograph. The upload accepts JPEG, PNG and GIF and stops at 2 MB, which is a ceiling you will not reach - a 1500 x 500 photograph saved as JPEG normally comes to a few hundred kilobytes. PNG earns its place only on flat artwork with hard edges, where it stays crisp and stays small; the same photograph as PNG is several times heavier for nothing visible. Worth remembering that choosing a transparent background forces PNG whether the picture suits it or not.
Not directly. Those are different shapes, and a 1500 x 500 file dropped into one of them is simply cropped again by the site receiving it. Every platform sizes its banner differently and each changes on its own schedule, so there is no single file that satisfies all of them.
